Ministry Eyes 7.5m Tourists Going Beyond Jakarta, Bali

Indonesia will strive to promote destinations in the country other than overcrowded Bali and Jakarta to help achieve its target of 7.5 million foreign visitors this year, a Tourism Ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.

Gusti Ngurah Putra said the government would promote the country as an ecological and cultural destination, as well as a MICE venue — an industry term referring to meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions.

In terms of MICE, Putra said Yogyakarta, Padang, Solo, Manado and Bangka-Belitung would be promoted as alternatives to Jakarta and Bali.

“For the two Asean Summits, which will be held in April and October, we will prepare Jakarta and Bali as the locations because the standard of facilities needed for heads of state are only available in those two areas,” Putra said. “However, there are approximately 600 international events that will be held all over Indonesia in 2011.”

He said the opening of more international airports this year, such as the Lombok airport in Mataram, would also help in reaching the 7.5 million goal — half a million more than last year’s target.

“We now have 17 international airports all over Indonesia,” he said. “It would really help the distribution of tourists as well as the development of tourism in several places that have cultural and natural attractions.”

The expectation was that several international entry points would lead to an increase in demand for tourism facilities such as hotels and restaurants.

But Putra added that the government was keen to ensure the ensuing tourism development was eco-friendly. A new destination management system, he said, would be employed by the ministry to this end.

“This means a complete development that involves many sectors, so that tourism development is not just about business but will not destroy the ecosystem and harm the society,” he said.

This system, he said, was successfully implemented in the last two years in West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, where the Komodo National Park is located.

“We built an access road to Komodo National Park from Labuhan Bajo with funding from the Switzerland government, making it easier for tourists to go there,” he said.

“Moving forward, we have a complete development plan for the tourism sector in Flores that will benefit both the society and tourists.”

This year, he added, Indonesian tourism development would be pro-growth, pro-job, pro-poor and pro-environment.

Endangered Sea Turtles Saved in Bali

Denpasar. Police in Bali have arrested a boat captain and seized a shipment of 87 live green sea turtles being smuggled into the resort island from Sulawesi.

The boat, KM Cahaya Rahmat, was seized by maritime police about nine nautical miles off Bali’s east coast shortly after noon on Wednesday.

The turtles, all believed to be more than 50 years old and weighing around 100 kilograms each, were found hidden in a hold beneath the boat’s deck.

The boat was towed to shore, and the turtles released back into the sea from Kuta Beach on Thursday, where the authorities had to be helped by tourists to carry the meter-long animals to the water’s edge.

Bali Police Chief Insp. Gen. Hadiatmoko said the boat’s captain, Habong, had been arrested and five crew members were released after questioning.

He said Habong had been charged under the 1990 Natural Resources Conservation Law, for which he could face up to five years in prison and be fined Rp 100 million ($11,000).

Hadiatmoko said police were now looking into whether the boat was part of an organized syndicate that was smuggling the endangered turtles.

“Each of the turtles could have fetched between Rp 4 million and Rp 5 million,” he said.

Habong, meanwhile, admitted to bringing the turtles to Bali to sell them. “I brought them here to sell because I knew that they’re a hot commodity in Bali and I would have made a lot of money,” he said.

He claimed he had caught all 87 turtles over a six-day period by trawling for them in the waters around the Wakatobi islands, located off Southeast Sulawesi, before making the 11-day voyage to Bali to sell them.

“I was just trying to make a living,” he said. “If I’d been more fortunate, I would have gotten away with it.”

Habong added it was the first time he had attempted to smuggle turtles into Bali.

While most of the turtles were released back into the sea, four were sent to the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency’s sanctuary on Serangan Island to recover from injuries.

“As for the ones we released, we’ll be monitoring them for the next few days to ensure they aren’t picked up by more fishermen or attacked by predators,” said Endang HS, a conservation agency official.

Meanwhile, ProFauna, a nongovernmental wildlife group, said the seizure indicated the illegal trade in sea turtles was thriving despite an official ban.

I Wayan Wiradnyana, coordinator of ProFauna Bali’s Green Turtle Campaign, said most of the 87 turtles seized were females, and their loss would have severely impacted the survival of the species.

“They were all of mating age, and were probably caught in their traditional mating grounds,” he said.

Green turtles were once commonly used in ritual sacrifices across the predominantly Hindu island, and their meat is considered a traditional Balinese delicacy.

In recent years, however, there has been a shift toward symbolic sacrifices where the animals are released alive into the sea.

But continued high demand has driven the trade underground, with several smuggling attempts being foiled in the past few years.

Bali tourism industry looks rosy for 2011

By Wasti Atmodjo and Ni Komang Erviani, The Jakarta Post, Indonesia

Jan. 05–DENPASAR — The tourism industry on Indonesian island of Bali could continue to see good growth this year, as stakeholders predict a greater number of foreign tourist arrivals and higher investments in the industry compared to last year.

The Bali Tourism Agency said 2.27 million foreign tourists visited the island between January and November last year.

Following a significant upsurge in December, with an average of 6,000 tourist arrivals per day, agency head Ida Bagus Kade Subhiksu said he was optimistic the total number would exceed the target of 2.3 million foreign visitors.

“We expect that the final figures show 2.4 million foreign visitors for the whole year,” he said recently.

He said the agency would wait for the final statistics and evaluation before setting a target for this year, adding that he expected conditions this year to be similar to or better than last year.

Bali Statistics Agency head Gede Suarsa said the island welcomed around 200,000 visitors per month last year, adding that he was also upbeat the target of 2.3 million visitors would be surpassed, with Australian tourists making up the biggest chunk of foreign arrivals.

In 2009, tourist arrivals reached 2.22 million, up 13.3 per cent compared to the 1.96 million tourists in the previous year.

Nationally, the total number of foreign tourist arrivals reached 5.78 million between January and October last year, an 11.88 per cent increase from 2009, Tourism Ministry head of human resources development Gde Pitana Brahmananda said.

“Overall, and especially for Bali, we expect better conditions this year. Our evaluation from various aspects shows a positive outlook. The conditions will be better if security, services and facilities are maintained,” Pitana said.

Each tourist spent at least US$1,000 per visit last year, less than 2008′s high of $1,178. In 2009, tourists spent an average of $1,000.

The chairman of the Denpasar branch of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), Ida Bagus Gede Sidharta Putra, said he was also optimistic, citing an upward trend in hotel bookings.

“From January to February, 80 per cent of our hotels are close to fully booked and other hotels show similar trends. As long as the situation is favorable, this year can be as good as last year, even better,” he said, adding that high occupancy rates were due to good relations between hotels and guests, as many were repeat customers.

I Gede Ardika, a member of the ethical council of the World Tourism Organization, warned the tourism industry to not focus only on increasing the number of tourist arrivals, but also prioritizing quality.

“Quality is not only about how much tourists spend, but also about their interaction with locals so that they absorb our cultural values.”

The tourism sector remains attractive for investors as well, with tourism accounting for 80 percent of total investments in Bali, the Bali Investment Agency said.

“Although last year we pushed for more investment in agriculture, most investors put their money into tourism,” agency head Nyoman Suwirya.

The total investment in Bali last year reached Rp 7 trillion from 300 business units, 80 per cent of which were foreign investments.

Suwirya emphasized that Bali needed to implement a moratorium on hotel development in Denpasar, Badung and Gianyar since the number of available rooms in those areas outnumbered existing demand.

Bali Magical Island

Bali is an Indonesian island located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. It is one of the country’s 33 provinces with the provincial capital at Denpasar towards the south of the island.

With a population recorded as 3,891,000 in 2010,[2] the island is home to most of Indonesia’s small Hindu minority. In the 2000 census about 92.29% of Bali’s population adhered to Balinese Hinduism while most of the remainder follow Islam. It is also the largest touristdestination in the country and is renowned for its highly developed arts, including dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking, andmusic. Bali is a tourist haven for decades.

The tourism industry is primarily focused in the south, while significant in the other parts of the island as well. The main tourist locations are the town of Kuta (with its beach), and its outer suburbs of Legian and Seminyak (which were once independant townships), the east coast town of Sanur (once the only tourist hub), in the center of the island Ubud, to the south of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, Jimbaran, and the newer development of Nusa Dua.

rism is the growing real estate industry. Bali real estate has been rapidly developing in the main tourist areas of Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Oberoi. Most recently, high-end 5 star projects are under development on the Bukit peninsula, on the south side of the island. Million dollar villas are being developed along the cliff sides of south Bali, commanding panoramic ocean views. Foreign and domestic (many Jakarta individuals and companies are fairly active) investment into other areas of the island also continues to grow. Land prices, despite the worldwide economic crisis, have remained stable.

Bali received the Best Island award from Travel and Leisure in 2010. The award was presented in the show “World’s Best Awards 2010″ in New York, on 21 July. Hotel Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran also received an award in the category of “World Best Hotel Spas in Asia 2010″. The award was based on a survey of travel magazine Travel + Leisure readers between 15 December 2009 through 31 March 2010, and was judged on several criteria. The island of Bali won because of its attractive surroundings (both mountain and coastal areas), diverse tourist attractions, excellent international and local restaurants, and the friendliness of the local people.
